This is my practice storyboard, based on my mini project.
Self Reflection: In my opinion, making a storyboard based on my mini project is easy since I can see the video and basically draw what I see. However, it is time consuming to make (draw, label, and explain briefly) rather than just making the video straight away and improve in real time. Also, a way I could improve my storyboard is to be more tidy with my drawings and to write more explanations.
This is my rough storyboard, to map out my ideas for the final storyboard
Self Reflection:
I believe I'm good at mapping out how my advertisement is going to turn out. I need improvement for my scaling to make the shot look realistic and I changed shot 12 into the new shot in the back of paper (to make it more believable). Next time, I would use red pen to show camera movements and mise-en-scene so my teacher knows what I'm drawing.
The text was an extract from 'A Quiet Place.' The film maker uses technical elemtes to make the town feel abandoned, making any sound is prohibited, and is challenging to live in this world
Paragraph The film maker wanted the town to look and feel abandoned. This is done by showing broken traffic lights, extreme long shots of empty roads, shopping carts on the floor, and close up shots of empty shelfs in the convinence store. Most of the mise en scene listed used static camera movement to show that there is no action happening and made the area feel barren. Extreme long shot was used to emphasis of how uninhabited the street was while close up shots reveals the messy and unstocked shelfs which implies that there was no one to fix them. Finally, trucking and tilt up camera movements was used to reveal more areas of the store, the lack of diegetic sound made the world more empty, and adding an non-diegetic sound (eerie score) further adds on to the abandoned atmosphere - making the audience feel uneasy and cautious.
This is my advertisement proposal to get an approvement from my teacher:
I am making an advertisement for the product: Porche 918 spyder white. My target audience is for females because supercars are mostly aimed at males but not for females. My advertisement includes: first show what the car look like from the front, back, top, then the car is doing manly acts (burnout, and drifting), girls from the sidewalk looks at the car (impressed), finally it rolls down the window and it's a girl (swinging her hair), men are speechless (jaws dropped) and she drive to the sunset.
Lifestyle Choices: Touring around the country/ go from point A to point B more in style
Values and Attitudes: To look and feel cool using the vehicle
Opinions: luxury looking car and fast
4. Understanding Consumer Behavior:
Needs: The desire that the product address is to make the user feel different from others and to make their level of confidence
Motivations: Their motivation would be to attract attention from people, and to look rich
Pain Points: The problems that the product can solve is confidence problems and shame about dulll looking car
5. Competitor Analysis:
Competitor Name: Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, and Maserati
Competitor's Target Audience: Mostly men that are car enthusiasts
6. Target Audience Persona:
Persona Name: Car enjoyers
Age: 25-35
Gender: Female
Occupation: Entreprenuer/Professional Investors
Interests: Likes to drift with cars, have a liking to luxury cars
Lifestyle: High class, rich people lifestyle
Values and Attitudes: Cool looking car that attracts attention
Needs and Motivations: Treat themselves with an expensive car just because they can (alot of money to spend)
Pain Points: Fame, & self image problems
7. Aligning Advertisement with Target Audience:
Message: Females can ride cool and expensive cars too
Visuals: Women swaying her hair as she gets outside of the car, white colour car (typical colour for women),
Tone: Badass tone
Plan for advertisement: Car doing manly stuff, pressing the gass = sound from car, girls from sidewalks looks at car, driftss in a 360 (sunset) then roll down the window and it's a girl (swinging her hair)
or
anonyms competitor in a car race, then burnout = car cool sounds, race starts, pov of men struggling behind, trying to compete with the first anonyms competitor, shifts to the first place using 1 arm + chillin, first place won --> car door open, heels step out, opened the helmet and hair swaying
Self Reflection
By specifying my target audience, I get to identify the technical elements required to engage my audiences. Since I'm targeting to high class females, I would use mise-en-scene that females can relate to such as a female swaying her hair, and people in relationships. Also by knowing that females love being the centre of attention, I would use cutaway editing to show the people's reaction of seeing the car - which encourage them to purchase it and would result in getting that attention. This all helped so that I know what elements to use in my final storyboard.
Here is a video I made experimenting with different camera angles + movements
Medium Shot: Shows the audience the subject's action (walking down the stairs) and facial expression (shocked).
Tilt up/low angle: The use of the tilt up reveals a second subject while the low angle makes the subject look intimidating and superior. This makes the audience feel worried for the first subject.
High Angle: Gives the impression that the subject look fragile, defenseless, or intimidated from this angle.
Zoom in: bring in the audience closer to the subject (face), creating suspenseful scene and shows emotion (fear)
Close-up shot: Mostly portrays the character's expression, here we can see both characters are given close up shots of their faces, displaying their expression of seriousness or cowardness.
Extreme close-up: A shot that is only focused on small subject, like the eye, to show a deep-intense emotion. This shot captures a glare from the victim to create suspense, and a smirk to make the audience feel relieved.
Medium shot: Shows the subject's expression (happy) as they perform an action (hugging).
Self Reflection:
I am good at coming up with the general idea for the video however when me and my teamate are about to record it, we couldn't find enough people so we had to improvise by shortening the scenes. This mini project helped me to recognize the different camera angles, movements and it's effect on each shot. I might use some of these techniques in my final storyboard, like the medium shot. Next time, I would do better in continuity editing to make the scenes flow better.

Commercials that I watch to give me ideas for my project
Self Reflection:
After looking at all these advertisements, it gave me the inspiration to use similar techniques such as the lighting for the car comercial. This also gave me ideas how I should use different camera angles and movements to emphasis on the car and it helped me indicate the duration of each shot. Then I would try to add my own mix into it such as adding a different song and bright atmosphere to target females instead of men.
+ Learned about Demographic and Psychographic target audiences
+ Looked at the advert (barbie)
Week 3:
+ Watched 3 adverts and analyse them
+ Need 1 more simple one, and 1 more detailed analysis
Week 4:
+ I learned about mise-en-scene, visual aspects of media such as colour, blocking, props, weather, hair, set design and etc
+ I studied about the different groups of audiences, Demographic (age, income, location, occupation) and Psychographic (interests, values)
+ I finished the mini project experimenting with the camera angles and camera movement
+ I finished My Target Audience post
+ I started to get ideas for my advertisement: about supercars for women
Week 5:
+ I leanred about sound and types of it (diegetic and non-digetic).
+ I learned about how to make a storyboard (layout, and what to put in it) and practice making one
Week 6:
+ I learned about technical editing elements such as cutaways, match-cut, cross-cutting
+ I made a video analysis about Quiet Place clip (practicing Section A for the exam). I was tasked to choose 1 big idea that describes the video and used technical elements (camera angles, camera movements, sound, and edit) to support the big idea.
+ I submited the practice storyboard
+ I made the proposal for my advertisement
Week 7 + I make a video analysis about Peggy, in captain America. I wrote down the technical elements (camera angles, camera movements, sound, edit, and mise-en-cense) to support that Peggy is being casted away and overlooked than the men.
+ I did a Unit Test about camera angles and movements
+ I finished my draft storyboard and my teacher told me to work on my scaling so my shot looks realistic
+ I'm about to start my final storyboard
Week 8
+ I started my critical self reflection powerpoint and finished the first question. While doing it, I feel it takes a long time to do it since I have to think about what to type and how to format my response.
+ I continued my final storyboard. I believe I took too much time drawing each shot and I will improve by simplyfying my drawings and continue making it faster since I have many shots and limited time.
Week 9:
+ I finished my final storyboard and critical self reflection. During the proccess of finishing it up, I had difficulties on the cam scanner app - sometimes it is too bright and I cannot see my text clearly so I had to redo it (eventhough I tried to reduce the brightness in the app, it's still bad quality sometimes).
+ I learned about 4 media theories such as the Hypodermic Needle theory, Two Step Flow theory, Desensitisation (compassion fatigue), and social learning. All of these theories I can use to answer the question in section B of the exam such as 'How does media ownership affect the content that it produces?'
+ I also learned how to structure my answer to respond to the section B question: which is starting with an introduction, paragraph 1 consisting of the point, the context, a case study, and the theory related to it. Then repeat with paragraph 2 and 3.
Self Reflection
Keeping track of my weekly progress helped me to stay organize and aided me in time management so I know what to do in my free time. This makes me more focused in doing unfinished task. By doing the task as soon as possible (final storyboard), I get to use the remaining time to double check for any potential mistakes (wrong spelling or unclear drawing). All of this assisted my progress on finishing my final storyboard on time and in high quality.
