These are examples of how fans interact (through comments and likes) with our social media. It's not much, but we can see their anticipation of the upcoming album release.

This is another example that shows fans engaging with our content.

Final Critical Reflection

This is my Final Critical Reflection for this project.

This project tasked us to make a music video, digipak, and social media based on the genre of our choice. After some consideration and discussion, we chose the Indie genre with our song choice being Here With Me sung by d4vd. With this, me and my team created a star called Do0d with a outgoing, happy, energetic persona in the first half of the video then a sad, lonely, heartbroken persona for the second half. As for the dominant reading, we want our audience to receive the message of “Love is filled with ups and downs, both happiness and sadness” when they finish watching our music video.

Branding ties the music video, digipak, and social media together by utilising a dim lighting and dark clothing that can be seen in all of the products because it connotes his mood change from happy to miserable. The visuals of his flat expression with the slight blue colour further connote his sadness and shows he is experiencing pain as pain is often related to emotionless appearance. So with this, we use this as our theme on all the products (music video, digipak and social media to keep it consistent and to make it seem it belongs together).

Based on the Genre theory made by Steve Neal, it states that a media product has to be similar enough to be recognizable but different enough to be new and unique. So first, we research the conventions for the Indie genre. Examples ranging from having a low budget which is reflected in the low quality videos and inexpensive sets; Indie music videos revolve around romantic narratives; mostly include lip sync coupled with a live band performance; and the set are often located at natural settings such as the forest or near public roads.

So to follow the genre theory, the first way we conformed the Indie genre was by using a phone camera to record the b rolls (cinematic shots) in the introduction of the music video, by utilising the trucking camera movement, which would then show the low quality that are often found in Indie music videos. Second, we mostly show lip syncing through medium-long shots of our artist, Do0d, as the main performance so the audience can easily follow the lyrics and thus adds realism to the scene. And third, we revolve around a romance storyline in which about an Indonesian highschooler going through the ups and downs of a romantic relationship.

As for the ways we divert from the conventions, we didn’t divert much as we only diverted from the original video of Here With Me by removing the idea of filming on the beach.

For the digipak, Indie conventions use basic colours, basic pictures, and elements that are not too flashy to the eye so the way we conform to this convention is that we use mellow/monotone lighting (with a slight of blue hue) to foreshadow his sadness. This is all so that it looks like a digipak from the Indie genre to make the audience familiar with it.

In the music video, we represent teens and young adults ages 17+ that are both male and female - specifically speaking, we are targeting people who are in relationships. This is shown by the music video representing a romantic storyline which involves a young male that is in highschool being in a relationship with a young girl that is also in highschool. This would make the couples in the audience be able to relate to the video and thus make them more engaged/interested in it.

In this video, we took on the boy’s perspective as based on the stereotypes, males are often the main character in most narratives so we wanted to follow it and thus wanted to show his behaviour regarding the events that he went through. During the first half of the video we represent the teen male to be happy and energetic through mise-en-scene (actor performance) such smiling from ear to ear when he is getting ready for school; we record him in daylight to connote his energetic mood; and the choice of white clothing during the basketball scene to imply he is in peace when he is with the girl.

Then as Do0d, our star, picks up the basketball, the second half of the video starts and it represents him as gloomy, and lonely and is shown by many technical elements. As he picked up the basketball with her, we used a match cut editing to smoothly transition to his sad persona and shoot the scene during night time. This connotes the shift in his mood from happy to depressed as night time shows dark times and implies gloomy mood. Then, as the video continues, he is shown in a more distressed state by the mise-en-scene (actor performance) of him throwing his pillows around, his bed is messy which shows his stressful mind and the use of dark clothing to further imply that Do0d is depressed.

Our social media page engages with the audience by allowing them to comment their thoughts and opinions about Do0d’s post in the Instagram comment section. This way, the artist could either receive critical feedback or compliments on the upcoming album from their fans.

Based on the Uses and Gratification theory (Personal Identity) made by Blumbler and Katz, it is seen in Do0d’s Instagram page that as he ages, he looks more mature and wise and thus this makes his fans want to be like him since in Instagram, the monotone expression coupled with simple basic, dark clothing makes him seem more grown-up.

In conclusion, the purpose of all our products is to show the good times and hardships of being in love at a young age. This is to represent couples so that they can relate to it and thus would enjoy the music video. We believe our products were successful as the feedback gained from the survey matched our initial intention for how we wanted to represent Do0d throughout all our media products (music video, social media, and digipak).

Screen Test: Audience Feedback

This post explains how we showed a rough draft of our music video, album cover, and social media page to some members of our target audience in order to receive helpful feedback. This blog post was made by everyone in my team.

The purpose of a screen test is to gain audience feedback about our work and see if there are any improvements that can be made. We decided to use google forms to create a survey to share with our audience because it is a fast and efficient way to collect data as we can easily share it to people (through sharing the link for the google form). Here are some of our questions:

Music Video Survey Questions

  1. Describe the artist in three words

  2. What do you think is the message of the video?

Digipak Survey Questions (Album Cover)
  1. What emotions do you feel when looking at our digipak? (1-5 scale)

  2. Who do you think is the target audience from how the digipak looks?

  3. Do you feel the design conforms to the Indie genre?

  4. What do you think should be changed/modified from our album cover?

Social Media Survey Questions

  1. Do you follow any artists from the Indie genre? (E.g., Reality Club, Joji, D4vd, Arctic Monkeys, etc)

  2. What do you like about that artist's social media? (E.g., Their posts, stories, followings)

  3. What do you think of our Star's name (Do0od)?

We chose these questions because we believe by collecting these data, we would be able to match whether the audience interpreted the same readings/messages, as us, about the drafts of the music video, digipak, social media and our star’s persona. If it matches up, we’re going in the right direction, if not, we need to find out what needs to be improved upon. We included members of our target demographic in the screen test to ensure that the feedback we receive is appropriate. Finding people for the screen test was difficult because me and my team just finished the drafts near the deadline and the time was already late at night, so there were not many people to survey. Here are the drafts that we showed audiences for the screen test:

Here are the results from the audience feedback:

Results from Music Video Draft Survey

Feedback from my teacher for the music video draft

By noting down these feedback, we get to know what parts of our video we need to improve on and we could always refer back to it just in case we forgot. It also acts as a check list for what to do next to make specific parts of the video better.

Results from Social Media & Digipak Draft Survey

From the feedback we learned that all of our audience uses Instagram for daily use so we’re going to target them by making our star’s profile on Instagram. Then, the audience stated that the introduction of the music video draft was slightly dull/dark so we learned from that mistake and are going to improve it through editing it brighter for the final video. Also we’re planning to add abstract illustrations for the background for our album so that it fills up the empty space in the digipak.

We are going to change our star’s name, from Do0od to Do0d, to make it look simpler and cleaner. This also makes it easier for our audience to look up our star in social media. Furthermore, based on the music video feedback, we’re going to make the happy scenes use more vibrant colours in order to make the scene feel more energetic and to further connote that our artist is in a cheerful mood.

This screen test was a useful part of our process because it helped us gain audience feedback and we could identify whether they have the same understanding of the message conveyed as us. Based on the feedback received, we believe we’re going in the right direction as most audiences have the same readings that we originally intended for the music video, social media, and digipak drafts and only need a few adjustments to improve them.

Self Reflection:
This screen test helped my overall project by gaining feedback on our music video, social media, and album cover draft. This helped us indicate whether our drafts allign with our original ideas and the audience gave suggestions on how to improve them. One of the problems we encountered was our music video draft wasn't completed so there wasn't enough footage to get feedback from. Then a solution for it was to just briefly compile all the clips chronologically, without too much edit, in order to save time and we can gain feedback from the audience as soon as possible. A way I'll improve this next time is to ask more people to fill in the google forms so we'll have more suggestions and more potential ways to improve the project.

Post Production: Editing

This is the editing process for the project. This blog post was made by Bagas.

I have always used capcut from all the previous projects such as the documentary, it is simple to use and the UI is easily noticeable, by that I mean it's easy to locate elements (effects and other adjustments).

Capcut labels the elements clearly such as transitions, captions and vice versa. This makes it easier to locate the required editing features. Also this tab that previews the clips before adding it makes it less time consuming since I will know which video to add ( if there are multiple videos that look similar, by clicking it once capcut allows the user to view the video before inputting in onto the timeline .

The first step I did was laying out all of the clips in a chronological order, following our storyboard, then the song was added. A major feedback that changed most of the editing was when our teacher said to cut and edit to the beat of the song, this gives it a smoother flow and makes it look neater.

I followed up with adding adjustments towards the music clips, retouching them by changing the lighting, contrast, etc.

PROBLEMS:

  • Multiple problems I had with editing is that in the process of it, we had flaws with our shooting therefore everytime we reshoot I had to readjust multiple clips within the video, such as the timing and editing.

  • Another problem I had was since its mostly handheld the camera angles the clips were very shaky and it didnt look good

  • Color and lighting as well was very different from each other since we used multiple devices ( each has different setting and quality)

  • Time management , I was being barraged with school mocks so It was quite difficult for me to spare some time for editing , unless its a media project lesson

  • Loads of the features in capcut requires a premium membership and its quite expensive

SOLUTIONS:

This is one of capcuts handy features which stabilizes the clips, eventhough it requires a friendship, me and my friends gathered up money and bought the membership in order to use this feature. The results were satisfying , the clips didn’t have a significant change other than it being stable .

Another feature of CapCut is the apply to all buttons. This allows a clip’s adjustments to be copied throughout all the clips, since I said the problem was that most of the clips were different , this feature allowed the clips to look more similar to each other. This reduces the time to edit and makes the process much quicker.

As for the missing parts or recording problems when editing, instead of removing a whole section then ruining the whole timing again, I can replace the section with temporary text labeled the section that needs to be filled in. For example,

It can be replaced with text like this as a way to mark the missing spots.

Not only will this help in editing but itll help with recording as it keeps track of things that we need to fix or extra recordings we need to do .

As for time management problems, it was a major consequence of mine for not being able to manage time properly . Next time i'd have to free up more time for this

Self Reflection
Editing helps complete the project all together - combining all the camera movements/angles, mise-en-scene and the music into a video that flows well. The editing process makes sure the clips are alligned with the audio so whenever there is rythm in a scene, the editor (Bagas) would cut and match the clips to the beat. This is common for music videos and we are conforming to the convention. While Bagas did most of the editing, a part of the editing I contributed was, I imported b rolls (cinematic shots) of our artist's room such his bed, wardrobe, etc and allign the beat to it in the intro of the music video. One of the problem I encountered was I had limited time to edit as I started in class and there were only a few b roll clips so I couldn't use many clips as I wanted to. The solution to this was to just choose the best cinematic shots for the intro and keep the rest of the video the same. Next time, I want to contribute more on the editing process with Bagas as it can save time for each of us (as each person does less work) and we could potentially come up with better ideas together rather than being alone.

Production: Behind the Scenes

This post includes pictures of our behind-the-scenes that will show each team member's tasks (roles) in each scene. This post was made by me and Nicho.

Nicho setting up a suitable camera angle to film our star’s sad scene

Bagas and Nicho organizing to film the talking scene at school, under the umbrella

All people trying to make the bedroom messy to connote a stressful mood

Bagas getting ready to film our star (Doood played by Bagus) on the rooftop

We didn't have a clipboard so we improvised with just a paper and it included which scenes and

the number of takes we were in

Roles:

  1. Bagas: main cameraman

  2. Nicho: the person who did multicam in most of the scenes

  3. Saka: brainstormed and planned, what would happen in the scenes, before filming

  4. Bagus: main actor in all the scenes

Problems:

  • We had trouble with finding a day where everyone has free time

  • Our original actor was another girl but she was busy

  • Weather, rain made it worse for the happy scenes

  • The sunrise was never there

  • Time management, whenever we scheduled our filming, one of us are always late

  • Our ball deflated

Solutions:

  • We tried to do as many scenes as we could whenever all of us were present

  • We found another girl actor

  • We try as much as possible to not show the rain

  • We didn't use a sunset scene

  • We try to schedule the time we meet to be 1 hour earlier in case anyone is late

  • We still managed to use the ball, taping the hole and pumped the ball after every scene

Self Reflection
My role in this blog post was taking pictures of behind the scenes. This is so me and my team have the
pictures necessary to put in this post. There weren't many problems when I took the behind the scenes pictures as it is easy to do. However, one main issue was we had trouble with finding a day where everyone is free so we didn't meet as often to film, which then translates to fewer behind the scenes pictures than we intended. So to solve this, whenever we shoot a scene together, I try to maximize the amount of behind the scenes pictures to take and then choose the best ones for this post. Next time, I would use a physical camera rather than a phone camera to take many higher quality behind the scenes pictures so that there would be more images to choose from, which increases
the chance to get a better photo.
